Premier League clubs to ask Real Madrid president to dissolve Super League

Despite facing possible UEFA discipline that could include banishment from competitions such as the Champions League for up to two seasons, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remain associated with the controversial European Super League abandoned by six Premier League founding members and also by AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

ESPN now reports that Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all intend to ask Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to dissolve the company used to create the Super League project. Perez was to serve as president of the breakaway competition.

Per the ESPN story, Perez will have between two and four weeks to call a meeting of all 12 members to disband the project that attracted widespread criticism from supporters and resulted in the nine deserters forfeiting 5% of their prize money from European tournaments during the 2022-23 season and paying over $18 million combined “to benefit children, youth and grassroots football” to avoid additional sanctions.

While the Premier League clubs could attempt to take legal action if Perez does not oblige, Barcelona president Joan Laporta previously said he will fight the matter in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if necessary. It’s assumed Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus will remain eligible for all UEFA competitions until CAS delivers a final ruling in that instance.
