Washington — Following the verdict in Hunter Biden’s gun trial, the president’s son is set to stand trial in California, facing nine federal tax charges in a second case brought by special counsel David Weiss.
Hunter Biden was indicted in December and has pleaded not guilty to all counts. Prosecutors allege that he engaged in a four-year scheme to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in income taxes for the years 2016 through 2019. According to Weiss and his team, Hunter Biden made more than $7 million between 2016 and the fall of 2020, spending millions on an “extravagant lifestyle” while neglecting his tax obligations.
The indictment claims that Hunter Biden spent money on “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other personal items,” essentially everything but his taxes.
He faces six misdemeanor counts of failure to file his tax returns and pay taxes, one felony count of tax evasion, and two felony counts of filing a false return.
Hunter Biden’s legal team sought to dismiss the indictment on several grounds, arguing that the Justice Department’s investigation was politically motivated, that Weiss’s appointment as special counsel was unlawful, and that a diversion agreement between Hunter Biden and prosecutors remains in effect.
However, U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi, who is overseeing the case, rejected these motions to dismiss the charges. Initially set to begin on June 20, the trial has been rescheduled to September 5 at Hunter Biden’s request.
