Canadian Grocers Resist Government Pressure to Reduce Prices
For months, the Liberal government has been striving to get major grocery chains in Canada to adopt a code of conduct aimed at reducing food prices. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne has even sought to introduce a foreign competitor to increase market competition.
Despite some recent easing in food costs due to a slight decline in inflation, the New Democratic Party (NDP) argues that prices have not decreased significantly compared to the steep increases of the past three years. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has expressed frustration over what he describes as corporate price gouging that continues to burden Canadians.
A notable response from consumers was seen last month when some shoppers boycotted Loblaw, following a month-long campaign driven by those feeling the financial strain and blaming the grocery giant for high prices.
